Paint Yourself Chocolate

By: Sally Peabody

Love—Art—Chocolate!  Here’s an unusual, even artistic, suggestion for celebrating a slightly naughty Valentines Day Paris-style with someone you love.  Paint your selves chocolate.  And even better, you have a choice of milk or dark chocolate to create your delectable mini-masterpieces.

Where to find this delicious gift?   Visit Peter Beier Chokolade, the marvelous little artisanal chocolates boutique and café on rue Monsieur Le Prince in Paris.  You can always count on the broad selection of chocolate at Peter Beier to serve up some surprising tastes. During my last visit to the shop Lene Boehme offered me a taste of some spectacular dark-chocolate rounds topped with salted pepitas and hot chili flakes.  Perfect for eating with tapas, she said.  Indeed.

But something else caught my eye. Front and center on the counter were small jars of seductively pour-able chocolate.  Thinking they must be some sort of chocolate sauce, I picked up one of the attractively labeled jars and realized that this was no simple ice cream topping but was an entirely other edible delight.

Ever innovative, the Copenhagen-based Chocolatier Peter Beier has perfected making a chocolate ‘body paint’ that, when applied with the small paintbrush accompanying each purchase, lays on lushly spreadable, deliciously edible, layer of chocolate.  So how does this work? Lene directed me to a photo, hanging in the second floor salon, of a svelte female’s torso sporting two large hearts painted on the trim tummy--- a smaller solid heart, surrounded by a larger heart.  Great for Valentines Day, or for any celebration of love, she said.

So if you are lucky enough to be in Paris around Valentines Day, stop at Peter Beier for a gift that will surprise and delight.  Why not have a little fun with your sweets?   Get your chocolate out of the box and onto the body.  The perfect marriage of love and art!

Peter Beier Chokolade, 62 rue Monsieur le Prince.  Paris 6. Open daily except Wednesdays.  Lars and Lene Boehme are the hip and friendly English, Danish and French speaking proprietaires. Telephone : + 33 (0)1 43 54 06 06      Metro : Luxembourg, or Odeon
