France Through Eyes of Faith

Paris-Chartres-Angers-Reims

March 17-24, 2012

France is a feast on many levels. This intimate private tour focuses on the spirited ‘mind of the Middle Ages’ and the iconic foundations of contemporary Christian belief. Led by Sally Peabody, a Paris Specialist and also by an expert medievalist, you will learn to ‘read’ the architecture and iconography of magnificent Gothic Cathedrals (including Notre Dame de Paris and Chartres), ponder powerful images of Christ and of Mary, study the luminous ancient stained glass in St. Chapelle which depicts the stories of the Old and New Testaments, and view exquisite tapestries telling tales of spiritual journeys and visions. Highlights of our guided visit to the Cluny Museum will include the glorious Lady and the Unicorn Tapestries and the rare Vierge Ouvrant.

Our day trip to Angers in the Loire Valley highlights the remarkable 14th century ‘Apocalypse Tapestries’ displayed in a 13th century castle. These masterworks tell the story of the Book of Revelation in stunning color and detail. In the afternoon we will visit the beautiful Jean Lurcat museum to see celestial contemporary tapestries inspired by the ancient tapestries. Finally, we will enjoy a day in Champagne exploring historic Notre Dame Cathedral, the gothic jewel of Reims, and then celebrate our journey with visit to a noted Champagne cellar followed by a guided drive through the villages of this verdant wine-growing region. This promises to be a memorable experience.

This week-long tour will be based in Paris with day-trips to Angers, Chartres and Reims. Sally Peabody of Your Great Days in Paris designed this tour and is collaborating with Elaine Polley, Paris-based specialist in the Middle Ages, to guide a minimum of six guests, maximum of ten. The tour is offered for small groups of friends or from congregations. And, we can further customize this tour for your group as you may wish.
