Lyon is a splendid French city with a scenic and strategic location in the lovely northern Rhone valley. Bounded by two rivers, the Rhone and the Saone, Lyon is a charmer replete with rich history, Roman ruins, a renowned gastronomic heritage and an enviable lifestyle. Among its many architectural treasures are two well-preserved Roman amphitheatres, an important medieval Cathedral and the largest intact Renaissance era quarter in Europe (outside of Venice).
Lyon considers itself the gastronomic capital of France and a sampling of the markets, bistros, bouchons and food artisans leads one to believe that this just may be correct. Les Halles Paul Bocuse is a glorious permanent market with dazzling selections of the freshest foods and excellent wines from the Rhone-Alpes region. And there are other vibrant marché volants that set up along the riverbanks to sell beautiful fresh food and other products. Lyon is famed for chocolates and cheese, for uber-chef Paul Bocuse, and for its Bouchons, a uniquely convivial Lyonnaise style of bistro with hearty foods complimented by fine Beaujolais or Rhone wines, grown in nearby vineyards.
Join Sally Peabody of Your Great Days in Paris for this five-day small-group cultural and culinary exploration of a great French city as well as a day out to the charming historic small city of Vienne and to visit a noted northern Rhone winemaker. This tour will provide a delicious dégustation of Lyon.
